Crowds stroll down the Folly Beach boardwalk adorned with flags for the July 4th holiday in this 1937 image taken by local photographer Morton Brailsford Paine. In the background stands the original Folly pier, a green and white structure built with palmetto logs, that was lost to a fire in 1957. A new pier and 1,700-foot boardwalk, complete with amusement park rides, concession stands, and a roller rink, were built in the early ’60s, ushering in a golden age for Folly as beachgoers flocked to the island. After another fire ravaged the area in January 1977, it took nearly two decades for construction of the Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier to conclude. A new and improved version of this pier, scheduled to open in spring 2023, is being built with concrete pilings in the same location, offering unobstructed ocean views and additional space for pedestrians and fishing.
