Johnny Was is open on King Street, offering boho-inspired clothing and accessories.
West Coast Vibes
After opening at Freshfields Village in 2022, California-based Johnny Was has opened its second area location on King Street across from The Charleston Place. The boho-inspired brand, which has more than 80 locations, is known for its intricate embroidery and effortless silhouettes. In addition to women’s clothing, the 2,200-square-foot boutique offers accessories such as jewelry, handbags, and shoes; its signature fragrance and candle collection; and home decor. The King Street location features specially designed floral embroidery motifs, coastal-inspired hues, and floor-to-ceiling murals with a Carolina wren and yellow jessamine. “Charleston’s rich history, creative spirit, and undeniable charm make it a natural fit for our brand,” says CEO Rob Trauber. “We’ve designed this store to reflect the unique character of the city while offering our signature bohemian-inspired collections.” [239 King St., johnnywas.com]
Whimsical Designs
New York-based Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet is bringing its vintage-inspired, whimsical prints and feminine silhouettes to King Street. The label, worn by Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama, and Beyonce, joins recently opened national brands Paige denim and Rag & Bone in the block between George and Calhoun streets. CEO and creative director Bendet founded Alice + Olivia in 2022 while on a mission to find the perfect pants and has expanded to include a full line of clothing and accessories. Look out for Alice + Olivia’s spring collection, which embraces romance and maximalism with floral and lace designs. [364 King St., aliceandolivia.com]
Sharp Debut
Local bladesmith Quintin Middleton has opened his first Middleton Made Knives storefront at Storehouse Nine in the Navy Yard, showcasing his handcrafted knives and offering knife-sharpening services. Middleton launched the company in 2010, selling high-carbon steel culinary knives used by top chefs, including Sean Brock and Mike Lata. “This brick-and-mortar location is more than just a store; it’s the next chapter in our journey, and I am excited to connect with the community in new and meaningful ways,” Middleton says.
