Retail Buzz: Custom hats at Marsh & Magnolia in Hotel Bennett and high-tech shopping on King Street
November 2023

Plus, a special Columbiana dinner benefits Ibu Movement

Marsh & Magnolia debuts on November 2 in Hotel Bennett, offering customized straw and felt hats.

Hat Tip
Customize your own felt or straw hat when Marsh & Magnolia opens this month in Hotel Bennett on King Street. Shoppers will be able to select from men’s, women’s, and children’s styles and get the perfect size at the shaping and fitting station. Then, customers can work with a stylist to personalize their topper with an array of bands, ribbons, feathers, pins, charms, and brands. Marsh & Magnolia was founded by three local friends—Adele Cisco, Erin Engebritson, and Kristin Smoak—after visiting a similar concept while traveling. The boutique will welcome walk-ins as well as host parties and events. [404 King St.,]

High-Tech Shopping
Los Angeles-based women’s clothing and accessories brand Reformation has opened a tech-driven retail concept on King Street. Shoppers can use touchscreens to send their favorite styles to their dressing rooms and request additional sizes or colors. The dressing area also features adjustable ”cool” or “golden” lighting. As part of the label’s commitment to the environment, the store uses totes made of discarded clothing and accepts its own pre-loved styles for credit toward a future purchase. [287 King St.,]

Colombiana Dinner
Join Ibu Movement at 6 p.m. on November 15 to celebrate Colombian culture and craftsmanship. Supporters will enjoy a meal created by Colombian chef Mariana Velasquez and prepared by local caterers at one of 10 downtown homes, where they’ll have the opportunity to meet some of Ibu’s South American partners. After the meal, everyone will gather at a final home for dessert and a pop-up boutique, featuring artisan-crafted clothing and accessories. Ibu collaborates with female designers around the world to help expand their markets. Tickets are $1,000 and must be purchased in advance. []

Art of Fashion
Mixed media artist Stephen Wilson visits Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 18 to help customers create a piece of personalized art. Wilson  embroiders upcycled materials, such as bags and boxes of luxury brands, to create unique 3-D displays. [916 Houston Northcutt Blvd.,]
