White Duck Taco Shop
With its two Asheville outposts already beloved by foodie types in the mountains, this third location (the chain’s first franchise, owned by local Andrew Pannell) is bound to win the hearts of those of us who make our homes by the sea—especially since its Folly Road address is the perfect pit-stop for a quick bite on the way to or from the beach. Housed in a warehouse-like building behind a tattoo shop, it’s a no-frills, counter-service joint, with mural-splashed walls inside and picnic benches with colorful umbrellas dotting the patio. And that’s the perfect atmosphere in which to inhale creative tacos starting at $3.50 a pop. We were wooed by the lamb gyro with salty feta; heat-packing buffalo chicken; and our favorite, the crispy Bangkok shrimp topped with sweet pickles—all washed down with $2 Tecates.
If you’re seeking a waterfront spot with outdoor seating, this new John’s Island eatery from the folks behind Crave Catering is worth checking out. The spacious patio area overlooks Bohicket Marina, while a sleek marine theme defines the casual-but-hip interior. Start with the complimentary hush puppies—served with peach and jalapeño chutney—and move on to shrimp and grits or lobster pot pie. Or turn to the raw bar, offering up a seafood tower, plus oysters on the half shelf and peel-and-eat shrimp. We’ll be going back to try chef Michael Petrillo’s yummy-looking brunch menu.
