Commune connects like-minded foodies for unique dining experiences

Attend a Commune: A Supper Cult event and you may wind up feasting under twinkle lights at Palmetto Brewery or amid the greenery of MUSC’s Urban Farm. Each month, leaders Becky Preston Burke and Cory Burke, who co-founded Roti Rolls food truck, host the roving supper club somewhere new, but the mission is always the same: to deepen the connection among area food lovers, Charleston-grown ingredients, and local chefs and producers. “We want to highlight the people behind the scenes and help guests learn, all while having a good time,” Becky explains.

Before each dinner, some 150 attendees explore the venue, be it a fishery, farm, or coffee-roasting facility. Then high-profile chefs (think Charleston Grill’s Michelle Weaver, McCrady’s Daniel Heinze) prepare a meal from the Roti Rolls kitchen, using ingredients sourced from the site. Through it all, a family-style setting ensures participants mix and mingle.

On February 22, look for a barbecue ($75, including alcohol pairings) at the Technical Event Company warehouse. Expect live music, sips from Cannonborough Beverage Co., and sides from Roti Rolls. John Lewis of Austin, Texas, eatery La Barbecue—who debuts his own ’cue joint downtown this spring—will man the pit. For tickets, visit www.communecharleston.com.
