Spectators aboard the Dicksadee cabin cruiser cheer on swimmers competing in a two-and-a-half-mile race hosted by the YMCA in this image taken on August 2, 1936, by Lowcountry photographer Morton Brailsford Paine. Competitors jumped from the boat, anchored near the Fort Sumter Hotel, and swam toward the Ashley River Bridge guided by coach boats. Local George Burges claimed the trophy for his finishing time of 35 minutes and 45 seconds. While the YMCA no longer hosts swim meets in the Ashley, local branches continue to promote health and wellness in the outdoors, through events such as the Summerville Youth Triathlon on August 5.
