Kindling high-tech creativity

A graffiti laser, a homemade 3-D printer, a soldering station, and a vending machine repurposed to distribute electronic parts: these are the types of tools and gadgets you’ll find wreaking happy havoc inside a tiny house in North Charleston. Welcome to Makelab Charleston, established in 2011 by four friends who wanted a place “where people interested in science and technology could come together to work on projects and share knowledge,” says cofounder David Vandermolen.

Twenty-two members pay monthly dues to use Charleston’s first “makespace” round the clock, yet some 200 more join the creative clan for classes and workshops, special project nights, and community events such as Camp Happy Days’ Charleston Bed Race. Find out how to get in on the action at meetup.com/makelab-charleston.
