The Holy City native is pictured here during a sidewalk art show

Watercolorist and oil painter Mary Wilson Ball (1892-1984) stands beside an array of her work during a sidewalk art show on Church Street in this photograph taken by Jane Gilchrist on April 4, 1968. A Holy City native who worked during the Charleston Renaissance, Ball was known for creating paintings, sketches, and wood-block prints of her surroundings, capturing the vibrancy of marsh landscapes, the Morris Island lighthouse, and views of the Grace Memorial Bridge from Gadsden’s Wharf, as well as day-to-day activities, such as flower sellers on the Battery.
