The “Grand Dame” of Southern cuisine, who so graciously shared her wit and recipes our readers, passed away on January 13, 2025
Our hearts were heavy in January when we learned of the passing of Nathalie Dupree, best-selling author of 15 cookbooks and host of 300 television cooking episodes. While she founded many culinary organizations and was honored with awards and accolades, including being named a “Grand Dame” by Les Dames d’Escoffier and a James Beard “Who’s Who in Food & Beverage in America,” she was most fulfilled by mentoring, and advocating for, women in the culinary field.
In the two decades that she lived in Charleston, Nathalie generously welcomed our readers into her Queen Street home, shared recipes, and contributed articles, including a profile on her longtime friend Pat Conroy. She gave back to the city, serving as the founding chair of Charleston Wine + Food, and was the epitome of a gracious Southerner, always willing to share her wit, wisdom, humor, and guidance on how to live well and not sweat the small stuff.
Our thoughts are with her husband, Jack Bass, and her family. May she rest in peace.
