A massive KidsFair takes over the Gaillard this month

Once upon a time, in a land populated by talking dinosaurs and Star Wars characters, a crowd gathered to practice mini golf, pet reptiles, play violins, and sit atop police motorcycles while mascots paraded by. Sound like a scene from a child’s fantasy? That’s exactly what KidsFair aims to create on February 25.

Hosted by the Jewish Community Center Without Walls in partnership with City of Charleston and Charleston County School District and presented by MUSC Health, this funfest ($5 per adult accompanied by a child) brings together nonprofits, businesses, schools, leaders, and emergency personnel to connect with a whopping 10,000 children and parents.

“We began 30 years ago with some 40 booths. This year, we welcome more than 115 booths, plus food trucks, safety vehicles, a book mobile, and a stage for live performances,” says director Carol Berlin.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Gaillard Center transforms into six hands-on zones. Attendees can peek inside the human brain in “KidsSmart,” hop aboard a fire truck in “KidsSafety,” and crest the climbing wall in “KidsPlay.” Meanwhile, the outdoor stage spotlights winning double Dutchers St. Julian Devine Jazzy Jumpers, the Charleston Academy of Music, and more.
