Our taste-and-tell guide to some of the latest food-and-beverage openings in Charleston
Betty’s Eatery
We all have memories from diners of yore—baskets of fries split among friends, milkshakes shared with a crush, omelets served with bottomless coffee. Betty’s Eatery, located beside Whole Foods in Mount Pleasant, evokes a similar vibe. Opened by Tony and Kelly Chu of Red Orchids Bistro and Cirsea Ice Cream, the cheerful restaurant’s counter-service menu offers comforting classics for breakfast and lunch, plus ice-cream creations served in vintage glassware. Fresh garden omelets and salads with housemade dressings are go-tos for lighter fare; but if you’re up for indulging, consider the fried chicken and grilled French toast topped with honey butter, or a burger with comeback sauce. And for old times’ sake, be sure to split one of the decadent milkshakes spun with Cirsea scoops. www.bettyseatery.com
The Daily at the Gibbes
At first sight, you might mistake this modern café as another Gibbes Museum of Art exhibit. Situated in the gallery’s lobby, The Daily is painted a vibrant turquoise, with artwork from Sisal Creative dressing the walls and a funky chandelier illuminating the velvet booths. Fans of the original restaurant on King Street will be happy to find similar (if abbreviated) breakfast and lunch offerings at its swanky sister spot—including avocado toast drizzled with olive oil, whipped feta tartines, and a mezze (appetizer) selection—as well as new twists on old favorites, like a ham and cheese sandwich stuffed with spicy pickles. Espresso and tea drinks, smoothies, and wine and beer are available at the counter, providing a bev match for a morning of gallery browsing or an evening visit to the museum during its extended hours on Wednesdays. www.shopthedaily.com
