Folly Beach Eats

With fresh local seafood, a drink in hand, and the sun setting over the Intracoastal, Bowens Island Restaurant makes for a perfect end to a summer’s day.

For the ultimate Folly experience, head to Bowens Island Restaurant. The ramshackle seafood shed and family fish camp that “Ma Bowen” started in 1946 on a private 13-acre island behind Folly still dishes up Frogmore stew, hush puppies, seafood platters, and seasonal oysters plucked straight from the pluff banks. Cold beer goes down awfully easy when the sun sinks beyond the creek and casts a warm glow on mounds of blanched oyster shells, the heaping by-products of countless feasts. It’s places like Bowens, which won a coveted James Beard Award in 2006 as an “American Classic,” that epitomize life’s rhythms on the working docks of coastal South Carolina, and we vow to return time and again.

Open Tuesday-Saturday, 5-9:30 p.m. 1870 Bowens Island Rd., (843) 795-2757, bowensislandrestaurant.com
