Good Hair Days: Surfer Betty makes products to treat “surfer hair”

When surfer Kate Ferrara noticed how ineffective her hair-care products were against saltwater and sun exposure, she decided to create her own solution. “Everything I tried would immediately slide off, leaving my hair unprotected and brittle,” notes the entrepreneur who brings cosmetology and marketing experience to Surfer Betty.

After connecting through Folly Beach’s women’s surf community, Ferrara partnered with chemist Melissa Anderson, who manages finances and formulating, and social strategist Molly Ferguson, who handles retail partnerships and distribution. Together, they identified their mission: create products that protect and restore hair from saltwater damage while remaining clean and ocean-friendly.

Since its founding last year, Surfer Betty has expanded to include three hair-care products that are sold on their website. Their flagship innovation, “Hairscreen”—already trademarked and expected to launch this summer—creates a moisture-locking barrier that prevents salt and sun damage without harmful chemicals or the white residue of zinc-based alternatives. “We‘ve done extensive testing,” Ferrara explains.

The trio works with a professional lab to ensure all products are clean (some are reef-safe) while maintaining effectiveness. “Everything we’re trying to create is making your beach stay easier,” Ferrara says, “allowing you to go from the beach to seeing friends seamlessly without that dry ‘surfer hair’ everyone struggles with.”

Surfer Betty plans to introduce sustainable refillable packaging, launch a men’s line, and open a store. “We want to expand our products for all different types of people who enjoy being in the water and sun,” she says.
