Members of Charleston Caroling Company bring good tidings to local holiday events.
When alto Lise-Lotte Newell had the opportunity to buy Charleston Caroling Company in 2020, she took the reins of the holiday events business as the pandemic shuttered doors. “We were so grateful for every single gig that year,” she says.
Newell successfully navigated her first season as owner at a time when the community needed more hope than ever. “It’s really fantastic to get together and sing, that’s how a lot of people can unite, even with differing beliefs,” she says. “We want to bring that spirit of Christmas to people.”
Carolers audition for the group and are assembled into quartets to sing four-part a capella harmonies while decked out in Victorian attire. “Most of our singers are professionals and have graced the stages of some of our beautiful theaters in town and in other parts of the country,” says Newell, who still performs with the quartets. “Singing with the other carolers is the best part of the business.”
This year, to celebrate the company’s 10th season, Newell is introducing new material to the songbook, which includes classic carols and modern Christmas hits.
Carolers perform daily during the holiday season, including Second Sunday on King (December 11) and the Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park.
