Among the imperatives for this Mount Pleasant remodel-turned-custom build were open spaces flooded in natural light.
Happy Hours: Erin and Robert “Spence” Spencer in the rooftop lounge area, one of two “must haves” when the couple decided to build a new home on their property near the Pitt Street Bridge. It’s a primo spot for toasting sunset, especially when Spence is making his signature margaritas.
Made to Measure: The kitchen, the house’s raison d’être, is Erin’s happy place. It’s no wonder, as the cabinets, countertops, and shelves were designed and built to suit the avid home cook’s six-foot frame. Other custom features include the walnut shelves by cabinetmaker David Beason and the chandelier from Circa Lighting that perfectly frames the bold geometric backsplash. The black-and-white design was sourced from clé, an artisan tilemaker in California.
Focal Point: A palette of grey, greens, and beige creates a calm, relaxing vibe in the living room. Erin made all of the selections for the interior, including the upholstered benches from Celadon, modern sectional from Mobilia, and coffee table and curtains from West Elm. Her inspiration started with the dynamic oil painting by local artist Sean Williams that now hangs above the mantel.
Sit A Spell: In a home designed for entertaining, seating is a main priority. “Slope” leather counter stools from West Elm line the island, while a bevy of mod molded-plastic chairs surround the rustic trestle table from Celadon. The central spot is in use most days, whether it’s dinner for two or game night with friends
Chill & Grill: Newly screened-in, the back porch off the main living area offers more space for cooking and entertaining. Erin had the vintage rattan seating recovered by Aiden Fabrics, and Spence created a pulley system for the lanterns.
Hang Time: With four porches, there’s always an outdoor perch for sitting and soaking up the sunshine, such as this double hammock, a housewarming gift, off the guest rooms.
Early To Rise: With a “less is more” decorating style, Erin kept her master bedroom free of window treatments—plus it helps them to wake early on weekdays, she says.
The adjoining bath features the same tile as the kitchen backsplash, custom vanities by cabinetmaker David Beason, a clawfoot tub from Moluf’s, and two “Drake” hemp-wrapped brass wall sconces from Ro Sham Beaux. Both rooms open to a private porch outfitted with cushioned teak chaise lounges and chairs from Tommy Bahama.
