A couple hundred stores from here to the Caribbean carry Madison-Mathews’s 100-percent cotton tunics, dresses, loose-fitting shorts, kids’ apparel, bedding hand-block-printed in India, and more. ”We’re really big in resort towns like Palm Beach, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket,” says Caroline Chakeris, who founded the company three years ago.
“I was simply trying to make the perfectly flattering, all-cotton tunic,” she recalls. ”I was tired of putting on things that weren’t comfortable, that weren’t cool and breezy.” After designing her inaugural garment and sourcing the cotton, she dove in via wholesale, then grew the line to include more pieces that fit her comfy criteria.
It wasn’t until the space at 89 Church Street became available, not far from her own home, that Chakeris decided to take the leap into retail last fall. Lucky for locals, the Madison-Mathews boutique is now filled with a full array of the company’s offerings, including colorways and hand-embroidered garments that are exclusive to the shop.
