Did you know Charleston has 18 theater organizations—16 of which are members of a nonprofit alliance called the League of Charleston Theatres? That’s a whole lot of drama! So much in fact, that the league launched the Theatre Charleston Awards in 2013 to highlight excellent artists and productions.
League executive director Emily Wilhoit explains that finalists were chosen by 58 voters who signed on to score shows throughout the season. On August 31 at Charleston Music Hall, winners will be named in 20 categories ranging from outstanding play to best lighting design, plus five people’s choice categories. Each receives a trophy made by American College of the Building Arts professor Simeon Warren and his students, along with set and lighting designer Richard Heffner—a fitting way to honor local arts excellence.
