When Princess Louise of England (daughter of Queen Victoria), and her husband, the Marquis of Lorne, arrived with their entourage on January 19, 1883, for a week’s stay at the Charleston Hotel, it was the first time a royal family member ever visited the Holy City. She saw Magnolia Gardens, shopped King Street, and toured historic churches. There was thought she might winter here, with the Marquis contacting General William T. Sherman to inquire about the city’s suitability. Sherman proclaimed it safe, but the irony did not escape national newspapers, who stated, “It is to be hoped the people of Charleston will not take this as a reflection upon their civilization or hospitality.” The princess ultimately headed for Bermuda, leaving from the Battery on the HMS Dido amidst a grand ceremony replete with flowers and 21-gun salutes.
