Read the very first issue of Charleston
Lowcountry residents were able to pick up the first edition of Charleston magazine on newsstands in August 1975, marking a new chapter in local print media. Beyond the cover—a stately watercolor of downtown’s French Huguenot Church painted by Mount Pleasant resident and Wando High School art teacher Virginia Fouché Bolton (1929-2004)—readers discovered a curated collection of essays, recipes, poems, and articles, chronicling topics such as the country’s upcoming Bicentennial, the port, the arts scene, and more. The city and the magazine have certainly grown since that 40-page edition; Charleston now averages 192 pages per month, filled with informative and entertaining stories celebrating our favorite place in the world. We’re grateful to the writers, photographers, and artists who continually elevate the content of this award-winning publication, as well as the many loyal subscribers who have followed along over the past half century. Here’s to you!
